Cheese - Northeastern U.S.
Report 33 - Released on August 12, 2020
At this time, there is a lot of uncertainty with restaurant/retail sales and educational
institutions reopening plans that is affecting the cheese market. On the CME Group, block
and barrel prices have plummeted compared to last week. Some foodservice sectors have pulled
back on ordering. Market participants note throughout the Northeast, numerous restaurants
are not serving at full capacity. Cheese makers are working through fairly active production
schedules. Inventory levels are steadily growing and potentially outweighing market demands.
Some market participants note cheese prices were too high in the prior weeks. The tone has
softened with the unknowns in the market.
In the Northeast, the wholesale cheese prices for both cheddar and Muenster dropped
$0.4900. The process cheese price also dropped $0.6575. The Grade A Swiss price is down
$0.1050 following the release of the July 2020 Announcement of Class and Component Prices.
The Class III skim milk price for July 2020 saw a $3.27 increase from June 2020.
